Stratford Fire Department and EMS responded to a call of smoke in the house at 429 Housatonic Avenue, the home of mayoral candidate George E. Mulligan, on Oct. 31 at 10:23 p.m., and found smoke coming from the oil furnace. No fire left the furnace, smoke was cleared from the house, and no one required medical treatment, according to Fire Assistant Chief Jon Gottfried and Mulligan.

Gottfried said this type of call is not unusual at this time of year when oil deliveries are made and furnaces start working regularly.

Mulligan raised the question of possible sabotage to his furnace, but told The Star that if someone was making sabotage “they are too smart to make it easy” to determine the cause.
