A Stratford man faces charges after police said he led them on a chase, dumped a gun and jumped from his car, which then crashed into a tree.

On Sept. 5, members of the Stratford Police Department Narcotics Vice and Intelligence Unit attempted to stop a vehicle during a narcotics surveillance operation. The driver fled, throwing a loaded 9 mm handgun from the car. After a short pursuit the operator fled on foot, leaving the car in drive. The vehicle subsequently struck a tree, police said.

A K-9 officer from Milford helped police find the driver hiding in bushes near a house on Columbus Avenue in Stratford.

The driver was identified as Daniel Hylton, 34, of Stratford. Police said Hylton is a convicted felon and is not allowed to possess firearms.

Hylton was charged with theft of a firearm, altering the identification of a firearm, possessing a loaded firearm while under the influence, criminal possession of a firearm, possession of crack cocaine with intent to sell, possession of crack cocaine within 1,500 feet of a school, possession of marijuana, engaging police in pursuit, interfering with an officer, using a vehicle without permission, reckless driving, two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment.

Hylton was held in lieu of a $150,000 bond, according to police.
