Stratford firefighters gained access to a sealed attic at Oronoque Village and extinguished a fire there on August 15.
Stratford firefighters responded to a 911 call of a fire at Oronoque Village Condominiums on August 15 and found fire and heavy smoke coming from the roof area of the residence structure at 496A Niantic Lane.
Deputy Chief of Operations Jon Gottfried reported that fire crews forced entry, and a search found that the unit was not occupied at the time. Firefighters found heavy fire in the attic of the single story 1500 square foot duplex, Gottfried said, and they extinguished the fire after gaining access to the sealed attic.
There was extensive heat and water damage to the attic and water damage to the living areas of the unit rendering the unit uninhabitable, and the adjacent unit #496B suffered minor smoke damage, according to Gottfried.
Several firefighters were treated by Stratford EMS for heat exhaustion and one firefighter was transported to Bridgeport Hospital for observation, and the Stratford Office of the Fire Marshal was investigating the cause of the fire.
The incident call was received at 3:30 p.m. and the fire was declared under control at 4:15 p.m., according to Gottfried’s report.
The Stratford Fire Department encourages all home owner to check their smoke detectors monthly and to remember to change the batteries yearly.
